Domain Names
If you want a website you need a domain name. This is the unique name that will enable people to access your site. The domain name basically consists of two parts – the name and the extension. The extension is the bit after the dot such as .com or .co .uk. Domain name registration is a fairly simple process.
Choosing a good domain name
Of course many great domain names have already been registered by someone else. However you’re sure to be able to find a suitable name for your website. You can either choose something generic and meaningless such as goldenblue.com or something that describes your site such as lawnmowersharpeningservices.com.
Here are a few tips in helping you decide a good name:
1. Decide whether you want the domain to describe the service you are offering or to use your own name or your business name. There can be benefits in search rankings in having a domain name using the “keywords” that describe your site or business
2. Don’t make it too long or with two many words – one or two word domains are best
3. You can use dashes in your domain but avoid them if you can and try not to have too many.
4. Make sure it’s easy to read and easy to remember and isn’t confusing when you read it.
When deciding on a domain extension, most people will choose either .com or the top level domain names for their country eg .co.uk if you’re in the UK. However, as these are the most popular extensions you could look at some alternatives.
